Matt Severson

Matt Severson is the Director of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences’ Margaret Herrick Library. He began his Academy career in 1997 in the photograph archive and has curated many exhibitions including the 2023 show “120 Years of Yasujiro Ozu.”. He grew up in Orange County, California, where he consumed a steady diet of Monty Python, Japanese monster movies, European art-house films, and midnight screenings of Eraserhead (1977) and The Rocky Horror Picture Show (1975). He received an MA in film studies from San Francisco State University, and his writing has appeared in many publications, including Film Comment and The Wrap. He edited the exhibition catalog Agnés Varda: Director’s Inspiration, which was published last year by the Academy of Motion Pictures and DelMonico Books.
