Made in England: The Films of Powell and Pressburger (2024)

When filmmaker Martin Scorsese was a child, watching films obsessively, he was particularly thrilled to see the logo of The Archers, the film company run by Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger. It heralded a world of “fantasy, wonder, magic — real film magic” that would shape his aesthetic. He shares those and other insights in this documentary, his personal journey through the influence of their films and his friendship with Michael Powell. Archival materials from Scorsese’s, Powell’s, and Pressburger’s personal collections create a vivid context for such classics as Black Narcissus (1947), The Red Shoes (1948) and THE SMALL BACK ROOM (1949). Director David Hinton also forged a friendship with Powell when he profiled him for the award-winning cultural arts program The South Bank Show
