JERRY MAGUIRE (1996)
30TH ANNIVERSARY PRESENTATION
Thirty years ago, Cameron Crowe’s romantic dramedy about an idealistic agent had us at hello. In search of a new project after the modest success of Singles (1992), Crowe created the story of a man discovering his idealism in a world fueled by money. Over the course of several years, Crowe researched sports management, wrote the screenplay and even wrote the 27-page “mission statement” that gets the title character fired from a top agency because he advocates a more personal approach to the business. To succeed with his flamboyant client Rod Tidwell (Cuba Gooding Jr. in an Oscar-winning performance), Jerry must learn to connect in order to live up to his own ideals. The project got even more exciting when Tom Cruise, fresh off a string of hits, signed on to play the title character. With Renée Zellweger cast opposite Cruise as his love interest and Jonathan Lipnicki as her precocious, adorable son, the film became a smash hit.
