Although Barbara Hershey’s career started in the mid-‘60s with television guest shots, the TV series The Monroes, followed by acclaimed early films like Last Summer (1969), it wasn’t until the mid-‘80s that she was acknowledged as one of the screen’s best actresses. This film, now celebrating its 40th anniversary, played a big role in establishing her reputation. She’s the youngest of three sisters in a family held together by the eldest (Mia Farrow). In addition to Hershey, Farrow looks after her aging mother (Farrow’s real-life mother Maureen O’Sullivan), her less stable middle sister (Oscar-winner Dianne Wiest) and ex-husband Allen. She’s so busy with them, she never notices that her husband (Oscar-winner Michael Caine) and Hershey are attracted to each other. Hershey’s portrait of a woman trying to find her own identity while involved with a demanding, critical artist (Max von Sydow) is one of the most affecting in her cinematic resume
