Visit the only museum in Los Angeles dedicated to the origins of early 20th-century filmmaking—housed in the oldest surviving major film studio in Hollywood (and oldest structure in Hollywood). This historic barn, built in 1901, became the site where Cecil B. DeMille and Jesse L. Lasky produced one of the first feature-length films made in Hollywood—launching what would become Paramount Pictures.

Now a California State Historic Landmark, the Museum invites you to explore the very space where the motion picture industry took root in Hollywood.

Inside, discover:

  • Cecil B. DeMille’s recreated office
  • The evolution of early cameras and projection technology
  • The history of movie theaters and exhibition
  • Rare costumes, props, photographs, posters, and memorabilia
  • Featuring icons of the silent era, including Charlie Chaplin, Rudolph Valentino, Mary Pickford, and Douglas Fairbanks.

Also on view:

  • Detailed studio miniatures including Paramount
  • A model of the Museum’s original outdoor silent film stage
  • Rotating exhibitions in the Jack Oakie Gallery

Browse the Museum Gift Shop for books, collectibles, and vintage Hollywood ephemera, and check our calendar for special programs including presentations, screenings, and author events.

FEATURED EXHIBIT: “The Barn That Made Hollywood”

Celebrate 125 years of Hollywood’s most important artifact. This special exhibit explores the remarkable journey of the Lasky-DeMille Barn—from its beginnings as a horse barn in a lemon grove in 1901 to its role in helping launch the motion picture industry in Hollywood.

It also marks the 100th anniversary of its preservation, when Jesse L. Lasky—an unintentional preservationist—saved the barn by moving it from Selma and Vine to the current Paramount lot in 1926.

Featuring artifacts from the Hollywood Heritage collection, rare costumes on loan, and the popular Paramount gym photo-op, this exhibit highlights both Hollywood’s origins and the ongoing efforts to preserve Hollywood’s history.
