THE OZU DIARIES (2025)
Although they sometimes took decades to reach Western audiences, the films of Japanese master Yasujiro Ozu (1903-1963) have come to be regarded as some of the greatest ever made. His simple focus on minute details of human behavior as they relate to family dynamics and changing times have made films like Tokyo Story (1953) among the screen’s most acclaimed and influential. Writer-director Daniel Raim became fascinated with Ozu while making the short film In Search of Ozu in 2017. Working with the director’s estate and Shochiku, Ozu’s home studio, Raim’s documentary provides a unique window into Ozu’s inner world and artistic process. He also interviews Akiko Ozu, the director’s niece, Ozu actors Kyoko Kagawa and Isao Shirosawa, and filmmakers like Wim Wenders and Luc Dardenne, who attest to the visionary’s influence.
