BACK TO THE FUTURE (1985)

WORLD PREMIERE RESTORATION

It took more than 40 tries for director and writer Robert Zemeckis and co-writer Bob Gale to get this science-fiction comedy into production. The five years they spent pitching the idea to studios, however, gave the writers a chance to fine-tune their script to near perfection. As a result, they created a film that launched one of the most successful franchises of the 1980s. Michael J. Fox stars as Marty McFly, an unhappy teen who is accidentally launched 30 years into the past by his scientist friend Doc Brown (Christopher Lloyd). When he accidentally prevents his parents from falling in love, he must correct the past or fade out of existence. Clever jokes contrasting Marty’s present with the past, a hit song by Huey Lewis and The News, dazzling effects, and Fox’s spirited performance helped make this the year’s top box-office film. This screening is the world premiere of a new IMAX restoration.
