Almost Famous (2000)

Realizing writer-director Cameron Crowe’s fictionalized account of his days as a teenaged rock journalist for Rolling Stone required more than just a good script and solid performances from a cast headed by Patrick Fugit, Billy Crudup, Frances McDormand and Kate Hudson. It required painstaking accuracy in every design area, including makeup. For Lois Burwell, it meant capturing the style of American rock bands like the film’s Stillwater and their fans, which was different from the scene in her native England. Since Crowe shot entirely in Southern California, Arizona, and New York, she also had to capture the different looks audiences would have at the various stops on a national tour. Her work helped lend the film an authenticity that contributed to its becoming a cult classic.
