THE WIZ (1978)

WORLD PREMIERE RESTORATION

The fantasy New York director Sidney Lumet created for this screen adaptation of the hit Broadway musical is even more vivid in this world premiere restoration. Actual locations like Coney Island and the World Trade Center are transformed by the artistry of cinematographer Oswald Morris and production designer Tony Walton to create a distinctly modern view of the magical land of Oz. Initially, the film was criticized for turning the farm girl Dorothy into a teacher played by the 33-year-old Diana Ross. Over the years, however, the film has developed a loyal cult following and has been reappraised to highlight Ross’ singing, the natural performance of Michael Jackson in his film debut as the Scarecrow, and the welcome presences of Ted Ross (Lion) and Mabel King (Evillene), who reprise their original stage roles. Critics have also reinterpreted the film as a surprisingly deep reflection of the Black experience in America that comments on slavery and the nature of Black manhood.
