Ikiru (1952)

Director Akira Kurosawa was inspired by the work of Leo Tolstoy when he based this postwar Japanese drama in a Tokyo government office. When a longtime bureaucrat (Takashi Shimura) is given a bad medical diagnosis, he begins to contemplate the meaning of his own life and has a newfound desire to leave behind something positive in the world around him.
