40 years ago, nobody involved with this teen comedy thought it would reach icon status. Yet despite mixed reviews, director Amy Heckerling’s wise, sometimes profane view of growing up in the San Fernando Valley has become an enduring favorite thanks to characters like Spicoli (Sean Penn), the eternally stoned surfer, worldly wise Linda (Phoebe Cates), squabbling siblings Stacy (Jennifer Jason Leigh) and Brad (Judge Reinhold), and cantankerous history teacher Mr. Hand (Ray Walston). Other future stars in brief roles include Forest Whitaker, Eric Stoltz, Nicolas Cage and Anthony Edwards. 22-year-old writer Cameron Crowe went back to high school undercover for a year to research the novel of the same name and then got the chance to adapt it for first-time director Heckerling. Seeing themselves in the characters, young audiences helped the film make back 10 times its budget. They also bought the soundtrack recording with artists like Jackson Browne, Don Henley, the Go-Go’s, Donna Summer, and Stevie Nicks. (d. Amy Heckerling, 90m, Digital)

For this ‘80s-themed screening event, we encourage attendees to come dressed for the high school prom, circa 1982!
