HOLLYWOOD LOVE STORIES AND CELEBRITY CULTURE
Club TCM at The Hollywood Roosevelt
The romances of golden age Hollywood–both real and fanciful–played out in the pages of Photoplay and Movie Mirror, and on screen in newsreels and series such as “Hollywood on Parade”. In this fast-paced talk filled with rare stills and film clips, David Pierce from the Library of Congress shows how stars from Clara Bow through Elizabeth Taylor were portrayed in fan magazines and promotional films, including staged visits to their homes, romances that existed only in the imagination of studio publicists, the coded language used when profiling closeted actors, and the careful management around potential scandals, such as Loretta Young’s adoption of her own child. Special guest Diane Baker.
