At the age of 15, when most young women are nurturing dreams of romance, Olivia Hussey was giving life to William Shakespeare’s Juliet in ROMEO AND JULIET (1968). With one of the most celebrated female roles ever written in the English language, Olivia won the Golden Globe and two successive Donatello Awards (Italy’s Oscar equivalent) for her astounding performance in the Franco Zeffirelli production. She had made her undeniable mark in modern day cinema.
Olivia, a seasoned veteran of the London stage where she debuted opposite Vanessa Redgrave in the Prime of Miss Jean Brodie, has appeared in over two dozen films, including Death on the Nile (1978) with Bette Davis and Peter Ustinov; the mini-series Jesus of Nazareth (1977), united again with the great Franco Zeffirelli; The Last Days of Pompeii (1984), opposite Sir Lawrence Olivier; The Bastard (1978), Hallmark Hall of Fame’s, Ivanhoe (1982), with James Mason and Showtime’s production of Psycho IV (1990), with Anthony Perkins. She has also guest starred in numerous television productions.
Still considered one of the most beautiful women in the world, Olivia owes this to her exotic blend of English and Argentinean roots. Olivia spent her early childhood in Buenos Aires, the daughter of a renowned tango singer Osvaldo Ribo and an English mother who encouraged her early inclinations for the performing arts. Olivia, at the age of seven, then moved to England with her mother and younger brother, where she spent the next five years attending drama school. From there she landed the role of Jenny in The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie. It was in that theater production she was spotted by Zeffirelli. The rest is history.
After taking time off to raise her young daughter, India, Olivia returned to work finishing production of Mother Teresa (2003) in which she portrayed Mother Teresa, the late Nobel Peace Prize winner. It has been released theatrically throughout the world and is continuing to pick up territories for release. In Olivia’s own words, “For years it had been a dream and passion of mine to play this incredible woman and I feel the right time had finally come.” In the last year, Olivia has been busy as patron of a wonderful organization called Animals SOS Sri Lanka, which is very busy in helping and aiding with the terrible plight of many animals in that region. She is also enjoying the ongoing development and success of her daughter’s career. India Eisley has now been a working, and quite successful, actress in her own right for the last 10 years. Olivia has been busy for last two years writing her memoirs with son Alexander Martin, and The Girl on the Balcony is slated for release on July 31, 2018! Olivia resides in the hills of Los Angeles with her family and menagerie of animals.
Olivia Hussey, through her work has given to the world some very special moments. These are moments that will carry on as long as films are being made and beyond. A classic she is and a classic she always will be.
