STEEL MAGNOLIAS (1989)

Discussion before

The bonds of friendship evoke laughter and tears in this adaptation of Robert Harling’s hit play. Harling was a struggling actor when his sister died of complications from diabetes. At a friend’s suggestion, he dealt with his grief by writing about her, and ten days later he had produced a tribute to the powerful, smart and often quite eccentric women of his hometown, Natchitoches, Louisiana. Producer Ray Stark saw it during its successful off-Broadway run and snapped up the rights. He also told Herbert Ross to see it, and the project became Ross’ way of dealing with his own grief at his wife’s passing. They decided to go for an all-star cast, with Sally Field, Shirley MacLaine, Dolly Parton and Olympia Dukakis as the old friends brought together by the major events in Field’s daughter’s life. Meg Ryan was the first actress signed to play the daughter, Shelby, but she dropped out to make WHEN HARRY MET SALLY… (1989). At Field’s urging, they took a chance on the up-and-coming Julia Roberts. The film’s success and her sincere, Oscar-nominated performance helped her break onto the A list. Even 30 years after its release, it remains a fan favorite for its witty and moving script and the strong performances of its female-dominated cast. (d. Herbert Ross, 117m, DCP)
